Funeral services for David J. Austen, 51, of Concord Township, will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2008, at Brunner Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor. Mr. Austen died suddenly Saturday, April 19, 2008, at his residence.

Born Sept. 18, 1956, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he had lived in Mentor and Willoughby before moving to Concord Township five years ago. He enjoyed motorcycles, nature, camping, spending time with his family and physical fitness. David held a special devotion to his Lord and found joy in serving others.

Mr. Austen was an officer for the Ohio Highway Patrol and the Willoughby Police Department for 18 years, serving as patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, detective lieutenant and reached the rank of assistant police chief before his retirement in 2000. He won many law enforcement awards including the Blue Coat Award, Officer of the Year, Education Award, Combat Cross and many recognition awards.
 

Survivors include his children, Amanda Austen of Willoughby Hills, Jennifer Austen of Willoughby and Kenneth "K.C." Austen of Mentor; mother, Maxine Austen of Concord Township; and brother, Dwight (Janet) Austen of Willoughby. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Austen Jr.; and brother, Kenneth Austen. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Concord Township Cemetery.
