Private services were held for Emma A. Drake at Rider's Inn in
Painesville in honor of her life on her 100th birthday.
Mrs. Drake died April 18, 2008, at home.She was born at home, in the Bronx,
NY, on April 18, 1908.
She attended East Orange High School in East Orange, NJ and Montclair
State Normal School, NJ, graduating in 1928 with an Associate Degree in
Primary Education. She taught at Roosevelt Elementary School in Englewood,
NJ as well as 21 years teaching third grade at Tower Hill School in
Wilmington, Delaware retiring in 1973. She was a caregiver for her husband,
Oliver D. Drake, until his death in 1978 after a 42-year marriage. She
enjoyed living in Ercildoun, Chester County, PA for 41 years and was a
member of Friendship Methodist Church outside of Coatesville, PA.
From 1956 to 1965, Mrs. Drake co-ran Camp Brig O'Doon for boys in Paul
Smith's NY each summer. She lived with her daughter in Mentor, Ohio from
1993 to the present. She enjoyed watching TV news, feeding her dogs, growing
amaryllis bulbs and going to musical theater in Cleveland. She loved
watching New Year's Eve celebrations of NYC, and remembering being there in
person with her husband Oliver. "It was a remarkable time to live," she
said. She saw horse-drawn ice wagons delivering to houses in NYC to men
walking on the moon. Mrs. Drake never stopped learning.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebeckah Richardson of Mentor; her
granddaughter, Sarah Richardson of Euclid, OH; and half brother-in-law,
Victor F. Anderson of New London, NH and two nephews, John F. Adie Jr. of
Brielle, NJ and James Adie of Milford, NJ Emma has grandnieces and nephews
in Brielle, NJ; Potomac, MD; Milford, NJ; New London, NH; and Southington,
CT. Her predeceasers are her parents, Elsie Nina Williams Adie of
Saugerties, NY and George Adie of Lenabo, Scotland; her husband, Oliver D.
Drake; two brothers, George Barclay Adie and John F. Adie; and her grandson,
Daniel L. Richardson.
Burial services will be private with internment in Mountain View Cemetery in
Gabriels, NY at the family's convenience.
The family suggests contributions be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve,
5786 Heisley Road, Mentor, OH, 44060, or the Lake County Humane Society,
7564 Tyler Blvd., Mentor, OH, 44060. Arrangements entrusted to Brunner
