Margaret
A. (Steiner) Koterba, age 91, of Mentor for the past 25 years, formerly of
Euclid, died Tuesday, Feb. 23. 2010, at Liberty Assisted Living in Munson
Township. She was born April 9, 1918, in Cleveland.
She graduated from John Adams High School, Wilcox College of Commerce and
attended Cleveland College of Western Reserve University.
Margaret was secretary for the law firm, John and Harry Elder and assisted
in the operation of the Young Democrats of which John Elder was president.
In 1941, prior to declaration of war, she worked for the FBI, where she was
secretary to the assistant special agent in charge, which was a job she held
until 1948 upon the birth of a son.
Later, she worked for the law firm of Leonard M. Blum until 1961, when she
became administrative assistant to Edwin C. Moon, former Mercer County
prosecutor, and one of the several owners of Thistledown Race Track. She
also worked for Thistledown while under the ownership of Edward DeBartolo as
his secretary, until she rejoined the FBI in 1970, from where she retired in
1981, after a total of 20 years service.
Margaret volunteered at St. Alexis Hospital, was a former member of St.
Felicitas Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister, member of Parkview
Tuesday Women's Golf League, Richmond Heights Garden Club and St. Gabriel
Church in Concord Township. She loved gardening and flowers.
Survivors are her son, Dr. Alan J. (Donna J.) Koterba of Concord Township;
grandson, Dr. Alan P. Koterba of Chicago; granddaughter, Kimberly (Ryan)
Neylan of Tampa, Fla.; nieces, Susan (Dave) Klausner of Lyndhurst, Sharon
Markstrom of Fairview Park, Gayle (Jay) Tippen of Maple Heights and Judith
(Moe) Daher of Mayfield Heights; and nephew, Paul (Cindy) Steiner of
Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Clarence J. Koterba;
parents, Ignatz and Sophie Steiner; brothers, Paul M. Stoner and Dr. Emil A.
Steiner; and niece, Sally M. Kreiner.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday February 27, 2010 at St. Gabriel
Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township. (Please meet at the
church.)
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brunner
Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor. Interment will
be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
