JoAnn Savage Martin

JoAnn Savage Martin, 87, of Hudson, OH, passed away April 23, 2024 at Tripoint Medical Center, Concord, OH. She was born August 29, 1936 in Chester, PA, to the late Thomas L. Savage Jr. and Thelma Bennett Savage. After graduating from Glen-Nor High School in Glenolden, PA, Mrs. Martin received her B.A. in English from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA, in 1958 and her M.S. in Education from Purdue University in 1994. She also did graduate work in English at the Bread Loaf School of English in Middlebury, VT and the University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Martin taught English at John Jay High School in South Salem, NY, and Springfield High School in Springfield, PA, before moving to Clarendon Hills, IL, in 1969, where she did substitute teaching for the Hinsdale School System while raising her family. From 1980 - 1985 she worked as a staff editor in Language Arts for Laidlaw Bros., a textbook division of Doubleday. After receiving her M.S., she was employed in the School of Education at Purdue University as a part-time lecturer and also worked part-time as an editor in Purdue Marketing Communications. In addition to countless school, church and community volunteer activities while raising her children in Clarendon Hills, IL, Mrs. Martin served as a volunteer literacy tutor while living in Evansville, IN, from 1985 - 1990, and continued working with youth and adults at LARA in the early nineties after relocating to Lafayette, IN. Mrs. Martin was a member of Teachers Encouraging a Love for Literature (TELL). She was also a volunteer with Habitat of Humanity of Lafayette, IN. A member of Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, IN, Mrs. Martin served as an elder, a member of the Mission Team, chaired the Habitat Ministry Team, and was a member of Circle One. In her free time, Mrs. Martin enjoyed the performing arts, reading, children’s literature, music and gardening. Survivors include her children, Joanna (Michael) Martin Menolasino and John Douglas (Gabrielle Draper) Martin; grandchildren, Christopher Menolasino, Caitlyn Menolasino and Benjamin Martin; siblings, Thomas L. (Frances) Savage III and William G. Savage and many nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends. Preceding JoAnn in death are her husband of 54 years, Robert W. Martin and grandchildren, Cara Nicole Menolasino and Nicholas Luke Menolasino. A memorial service in the Philadelphia area is pending for early summer.
