Doris Mae Amery

Doris Mae Amery passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at the age of 90. At the time of her death, she was living in Chagrin Falls. Born Aug. 13, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to John F. and Anna (Stuve) McNamara, she married Austin W. Amery in 1946. Doris moved to Ohio with her family where she lived in Willowick and Willoughby Hills, also vacationing in Manasota Key, Fla. She is survived by her three children, Carolyn Sells of Sarasota, Fla., Brian (Arlene) Amery of Morristown, N.J., and Eric (Sue) Amery of Mentor; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren plus one due in January; and one niece. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Amery; parents; and four sisters. Doris served in the Navy W.A.V.E.S. in World War II, teaching gunnery, and was employed in the banking business before retiring to raise her family. She graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn College. Doris was an enthusiastic athlete. She played women's softball in her 20s and 30s and took up skiing in her 40s. Doris was a lifetime golfer and bowler, playing both sports into her late 80s. At the age of 84, she made her first (and only) hole-in-one. A lover of animals and nature, Doris took in many rescue cats over the years and was a supporter of nature conservancies. She was both kind and tenacious, once tracking and finding a missing cat after nine weeks. She was also an avid photographer. Doris was an active member of AA for over 50 years, sponsoring numerous women throughout that time. She was a member of Hope Congregational of Euclid and most recently First Covenant Church of Willoughby Hills. The family wishes to thank Visiting Angels of Mentor, Crane House, Judson Home Care of Chagrin Falls and Crossroads Hospice for their care and support. Doris will be cremated and her remains interred at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township. Memorial services will be noon Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, where the family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.
