Gemma Konitsky

On January 11, 2023, our beloved Mother, Nonna, Gemma (nee: Vergerio) Konitsky, unexpectedly passed away at her home. She had a long and full life and will be terribly missed. Gemma was born July 26, 1932 in Bretz, WV. She was the daughter of the late, Giacinto Vergerio and Ester (nee: Damin) Vergerio. She was part of a close, loving family, seven children. She graduated high school and went on to graduate from nursing school and worked as an RN until she retired. Her future husband, John Konitsky, Jr., was a patient she met while working. They eventually married and moved from PA to Cleveland, Ohio where they settled in Mentor and raised their three children. The neighborhood was an extended family and the home was always welcome to friends. Regular visits with neighbors for coffee and donuts; she loved all kinds of desserts! She was a person that could be counted on in times of need, whether it was sickness, babysitting or companionship. She was a very social person and always liked being with others. She enjoyed traveling, dining out, going to the movies, listening to her son-in-law's band, being with family at Mentor Lagoons and enjoyed gambling, whether it was a local casino or instant lottery cards! She especially appreciated and liked live theater. She and her dear friend, Mary Ann, volunteered as Red Coats for the Cleveland Playhouse. No words can fill the void this BEAUTIFUL SOUL has left. Her funny sense of humor, positive attitude and loving nature is what we will always remember! The world was much brighter when she was here. Survivors include her children, John (Connie) Konitsky, Tom (Morna) Konitsky and Lynn Ann (Mike) Waters; grandchildren, Theresa (Connor) Proffit, Johnny Konitsky, Jessica Konitsky, Gus Konitsky, Micheal Waters and Lily Waters; sister, Ada (Randy Shank) Mastrine; special neighbors, Ms. Sue Horrigan, Maureen (Joe) Obrzut and Barb(Bernie) Lescar, many nieces, nephews and loving family members and friends. Preceding Gemma in death are her husband, John; siblings, Angeline, Mary, Norina, Romano and Rosie. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2023 at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060.
