Janet C. Sabath

Janet C. Sabath, 82, of Painesville Twp., died peacefully on May 13, 2023, at home while holding hands with her husband of over 60 years. She was born July 19, 1940, in Ashtabula, OH. Janet grew up in Ashtabula with her large Italian family of aunts, uncles and cousins. She was a 1958 graduate of Ashtabula High School and a 1962 graduate of The Ohio State University, where she met the love of her life, Steve. Janet was a huge Buckeye fan and dressed in her Buckeye gear at home while she watched every game. She was a member of St. Gabriel Parish for over 50 years. Janet took great pride in her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking and loved hosting Sunday dinners for her family, which always involved pasta sauce starting early in the morning. She also loved attending her grandchildren’s activities, going on family vacations, and planning mystery trips for her kids. A huge music fan, Janet loved to dance and was often found dancing in the kitchen with her grandchildren. Her favorite music included country, Italian favorites and hits of the 50’s. Janet spent her career teaching high school Spanish and English in the Willoughby Eastlake School district. No matter where she went her former students found her and reminisced about their past experiences in her classes. She would also see a former student and recall exactly where they sat in the classroom and when she had them in class. Her children and grandchildren recall how they learned the language from their mother speaking to them in Spanish at home on a daily basis. Survivors include her husband, Steven Sabath; children, Steve (Sherry) Sabath, Lori (Dave) Bastian, Rick (Susan) Sabath, Amy Sabath, and Lisa Sabath; grandchildren, Jessica, Tyler, Zach, Gavin, Ali, Joey (Ashley), Stephen, Nick, Evan, Ellie, Sarah and Stella; and great grandchild, Brooks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mae Lignetta; and her grandson, Connor. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2023 at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060. A funeral mass in honor of Janet’s life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Rd., Concord Twp. (Please meet at the church.) Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery, Chardon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the St. Gabriel Food Pantry or to Ohio Living Hospice, 38879 Mentor Ave., Willoughby, OH 44094.
