John J. Waldron

John J. Waldron, 87, of Mentor passed away August 29, 2016 at Brookdale at Newell Creek in Mentor. He was born November 18, 1928 in Cleveland. John grew up on a farm in Geneva with his ten brothers and sisters. He attended Platt R. Spencer high school playing baseball and basketball. Upon graduation, he attended John Carroll University and completed his degree in mechanical engineering at Marquette University in 1951. Shortly after graduation, John enlisted in the United States Navy and saw active duty in the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Sicily. He left active service at the end of the war and remained in the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant until 1965. After his active military service, John returned to Cleveland and married his wife of 62 years, Irene, and began his 35 year career with the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. He earned his certification as a Professional Engineer in 1962 and later became the plant manager of CEI’s Avon Lake Power Plant. In 1974, John was named the plant manager of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant, where he oversaw its construction and the startup of its nuclear reactor. Upon his retirement from CEI, he and Irene moved to northern California where he worked for General Electric as a Principle Design Engineer on their Simplified Boiling Water Reactor. While in California, he acquired his pilot’s license and enjoyed taking friends and family flying along the California coast from Napa Valley to Monterey. John was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption parish in Mentor for 40 years. He was an usher at Sunday masses and a member of the “Monday Morning Crew”. Throughout his life, John gave of his time to many organizations and charities. Among them were Junior Achievement, the Painesville Rotary, the St. Aloysius Parish Foodbank, Archbishop Lyke School, Lake Catholic High School and the AARP Tax Volunteer Program. Survivors are his wife, Irene; children, Marianne (Bruce) Barry, William (Laurie Moster) Waldron and Gerald (Wendy) Waldron; grandchildren, Ryan Barry, Sarah (Joseph) Sikon, Emily and Aimee Moster and Liam Waldron; sisters, Sister Bridgetta Waldron, OSU and Sister Catherine Waldron, OSU; brothers, Patrick (Mary Kay) Waldron, T. Gerald (Claire) Waldron and Harold (Kathy) Waldron and sister in law Maureen Spring. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Beatrice Waldron; son, John Patrick Waldron; sisters, Sister Angela Marie Waldron, OSU, Margaret Waldron and Roseanne Weibel; brothers James and William Waldron; brother in law, Gus Weibel and sister in law, Laverne Waldron. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 8560 Mentor Ave., Mentor (Please meet at the church.) The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
