Patrick J. VanSchie

Patrick J. VanSchie, age 66, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at his home in Mentor, Ohio. Patrick was born August 22, 1956 in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from Willoughby South High School in 1974 and spent most of his life as a resident in Mentor, OH. In 1992, he married his wife, Laurie A. VanSchie, however, they were together for over 40 years. Patrick will be remembered as someone who loved doing household project upgrades, either alone or with friends, and taking great pride in the landscaping and the overall care of their home. Pat’s favorite pastime over the years had been riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles and in his retirement, spending time helping friends on their home, business or vehicle projects. As Pat’s friends would say, “Pat has always been so helpful and giving and the special gift about him was that there was never a project, a tool or an engine that he couldn’t operate or navigate his way through”. Many of Pat’s lifelong friends remember his start as a young hard-working mechanic at Red’s Union-76 gas station in Mentor Headlands. Then for the next 30 years, Patrick worked at Alcoa Aluminum in Cleveland as a Supervisor/Machine Operator. He retired from Alcoa almost 10 years ago as a highly valued and dedicated employee in a job that he truly enjoyed. Along with his wife, Pat has always had a special connection with animals and he dearly loved their cat, Angel as well as their other cat, Maddy, whom has since passed on. Patrick is preceded in death by his wife, Laurie Ann VanSchie; his parents, Henry and Aaltje "Aly" VanSchie and his brothers, Robert VanSchie and James VanSchie. Patrick is survived by his sisters, Amy (Terry) Hollingsworth of Florida and Sandra Walch, and nieces, Taylor and Christina Walch, all of Ohio; his daughter, Jennifer Veselko (Fisher); son-in-law, Matthew Veselko and his granddaughter, Natalie Veselko, all of Painesville, OH. The family will be planning a Celebration of Life service for both Patrick and Laurie VanSchie’s love and eternal life together. Friends are invited to support and remember on behalf of either departed family member. This will take place at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, Ohio 44060 on Sunday, July 16, 2023 from 2PM- 4PM. A private family burial will be at Mentor Municipal Cemetery in a columbarium, where they will be placed at rest together.
