Roger L. Blum

Roger L. Blum, age 86 of Mentor, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland. He was born March 29, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio. Roger went to Shaw High School. He then spent two years in the Army before continuing his education at Cleveland State University, graduating from the Fenn College of Engineering. Roger worked as a Civil Engineer until he retired. He was involved in many roadway improvement projects in the Cleveland area. He was also a member of the Cleveland Auxiliary Police and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In his spare time, he enjoyed nature and working outdoors. He created a beautiful patio and landscaping design for his yard and spent many hours maintaining it. Roger was also gifted in photography. He loved taking photographs to document events and capture the beauty of the world around him. He exhibited photographs at several shows including the May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as well as in various printed publications. He received awards for many of his works. Roger was a kind and caring man who never thought of himself but instead enjoyed giving to others. He spent time visiting people who were alone and needed company, and would often drop off small gifts, usually food or treats, before leaving. He appreciated all the people he met throughout his days and kept in touch with many of them for years. Roger was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a fair and honest man with a unique sense of humor and a big heart. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years; Marilyn (Shea) Blum, children: Lee Anna (Thomas) Shetina, Sharon Benner, Laura (John) Palumbo, Kathy (Gene) Plaga, Robert (Nicole) Blum, 26 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Roger in death were parents: Simon and Florence Blum, and sister: Sonia Levine. A private family funeral mass was held at St. John Vianney Church on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, with interment following at Mentor Municipal Cemetery.
