Joyce A. Schutz, 88, a lifelong Mentor resident passed away peacefully September 4, 2021 at the University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center, Concord Township. She was born November 1, 1932 to the late Louis and Mabel Markell, in the family home, on Burridge Avenue, in Mentor. She was so proud of her community roots and would reminisce frequently. She grew up in Mentor, attended Mentor Schools and was a MHS Graduate of the Class of 1950. She went on to work for Mentor Schools. She was a secretary at Memorial Junior High School for 25 years, retiring in 1985. Her hobbies were traveling and dinners with WOW (Wild O Women) girls or monthly lunch dates with her girlfriends from the MHS Class of 1950, which they had done since their graduation. Joyce loved her home, working outdoors and planted flowers to adorn it. Joyce was a hard working Charter Member of Mentor High School Alumni Assoc. and served as a membership chairperson. She was the proud recipient of the Distinguished MHS Alumni Hall of Fame Award in 2010. She was also a proud recipient of Memorial Junior High School Hall of Fame Award and she received a KEY to the building for her many years of service. The Schutz family was active in numerous school activities. She attended every event that her 3 boys participated in. In fact she is remembered saying “If I had a nickel for every bleacher I have sat in I would be a rich woman!” Joyce treasured her community, her friends and her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the light of her life. Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her sons, Dave (Debbie) Schutz, and Don (Nancy Sanden) Schutz. She was GMa to her grandchildren: Alisha (Bobby) Doe, Nathan (Emily) Schutz; Nicole (Chip) Will, Tyler (fiancée Kaitlyn Currie) Schutz, Courtney (Oliver Flesher) Schutz, and Tori Schutz; and she was GG to her great grandchildren, Jackson, Brody, Maverick, Carley, Parker, Austin, Ellie and Sloane, and a dear friend to her brother-in-law, William Romanowski. In addition to her parents, she’s preceded in death by her husband, John “Bud” Schutz; her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas J. and Kelly Schutz; and her sister, Donna Romanowski.
